In our line of work, hobby, or passion, whatever we want to call it, there is a fundamental conflict between the need for long-term permanence of media and the quick obsolescence imposed by the industry and embraced by all of us, consumers (there is little choice).

Unlike many of the more technological and applied branches of science, yes, we still need to check and refer to works published in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. If digital technology had been invented simultaneously with the inception of binominal nomenclature we would most likely have rampant chaos in the naming and studies of living things. Think about it.

Dear All,

I have been following this discusson with interest. The problem is that anywhere there is a power switch, electronic publication is temporary.
A number of us made this argument to the ICZN with little affect. The development of electronic publication for zoological taxonomy is not a good idea.
