Hi Paul,
The techniques, processes, and tools/equipment used in photographing 
seashells are the same as those used a variety of scientific photography 
methods. The best general resource for information (in my opinion) is 
the outstanding volume entitled “Digital Photography for Science: 
Close-up Photography, Macrophotography, and Photomacrography” by Enrico 
Savazzi, 2011. I have owned and used this reference since it was first 
available and find it invaluable in its help to image seashells. The 
author is a now retired palaeobiologist and has authored several papers 
on fossils as well as seashells, often using examples of his 
photographing experience in the publication. Another book that I have 
found to be of great use is "Photographing minerals, fossils, and 
lapidary arts" by Jeffrey Scovil, 1996. Jeff is a world renowned 
photographer of mineral specimens and other hard to photograph 
materials, and freely shares his knowledge and techniques not only in 
the book but at seminars and symposiums around the world. In our modern 
and highly connected world there are a large variety of sources online 
that discuss various photographic methods and I find that to be another 
valuable resource. In my exploration of imaging shells I have personally 
experimented with and have had success with close-up photography, 
macrophotography, photomicrography, reflected UV-IR photography, image 
stacking, and fluorescence imaging. The above mentioned books and 
resources were used for both information and inspiration. At the COA 
convention next year in San Diego I will be giving a talk about 
photographing seashells, perhaps you can attend.
