Varnished shells

I got the shells this morning  and they were wrapped in newspaper from 1965.
Needless to say, the "clear" varnish had turned brown.  There are some really
nice shells too.
 
Thanks to everyone on the Conch-L for the suggestions.  Guess I'll start with
mineral spirits--and if that doesn't work, I'll try paint thinner.
