The Dale Bumpers Small Farms Research Center, Booneville, AR, is
recruiting a Research Associate with a Ph.D. in one of the following
disciplines: agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, soil
science, agronomy, or animal science. The two-year appointment has a
beginning salary of $57,408 which is a GS-11 Step 1. The Dale Bumpers
Small Farm Research Center is uniquely positioned to leverage a
multidisciplinary scientific team that will assist the Research
Associate with evaluating existing production systems using data
supplied from regional ARS research centers (Booneville and
Fayetteville, AR, El Reno and Lane, OK) and from the USDA Agricultural
Census. These ARS research centers have conducted extensive research on
livestock and poultry production systems, as well as fresh market
produce and other specialty crop products. Additionally, potential
alternative enterprise options will be examined including
locally-produced bioenergy feedstocks from dedicated herbaceous crops or
woody biomass, value-added agroforestry products, niche products
including natural and organic certified food products, USDA Farm Bill
conservation program, and ecosystem services credit payments. Computer
models will be used to quantify economic and environmental impacts of
agricultural systems in watersheds and complex production systems and to
evaluate the impact of changes in biomass level based on production
practices. The expected result will be a region-wide assessment of
agri-based economic opportunities for middle-scale farms and ranches
throughout the Ouachita and Ozark Mountain Regions that can be used to
assist with determining future market-based research directions.
Components of livestock, crop, and vegetable production systems will be
identified as part of a sustainable regional system that can be used
with transitional and long-term opportunities for agricultural producers
to increase income potential.

The Dale Bumpers Small Farms Research Center is located in Logan County,
6 miles southwest of Booneville, Arkansas (population 4000) and 45 miles
southeast of Fort Smith, Arkansas (population 200,000) in Western
Arkansas. It is situated along the north edge of the Ouachita National
Forest, near Mt. Magazine, the highest mountain between the Appalachian
and Rocky Mountains. Located along the Petit Jean River, Logan County
is a haven for sportsmen and naturalists.

For details and application directions, please call Dr. Randy Raper
(479) 675-3834 ext. 324. U.S. Citizenship is required. A Federal
benefits package is available. USDA/ARS is an equal opportunity employer
and provider.
