Science Officer: Diagnosing vulnerability and analysing opportunities
  (based Nairobi, Kenya)

Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) seeks to recruit a
highly competent and dynamic science officer.
CCAFS is a new major collaborative endeavour between the Consultative
Group on International Agricultural Research and the Earth System
Science Partnership, research communities, and their respective
partners.  Research over a ten-year period starting in 2010 is aimed at
overcoming the additional threats posed by a changing climate to
achieving food security, enhancing livelihoods and improving
environmental management in the developing world.

Diagnosing vulnerability and analysing opportunities is one of six CCAFS
research themes. The science leadership of this theme is based at the
International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, and theme
activities will be carried out globally and at locations in sub-Saharan
Africa and South Asia.

The science officer will report to the research theme leader and will be
responsible for managing and overseeing a growing portfolio of research
activities.

Duties and responsibilities:
•       Contributing to the writing of reports and project documentation.
•       Coordinating the evaluation of research proposals and implementation
of projects within the Theme.
•       Organising and contributing to workshops, meetings and training events
•       Representing the Theme and CCAFS in national, regional and
international meetings, and helping to develop and maintain
collaborative relationships.
•       Reviewing and synthesizing knowledge and contributing to strategic
research within the Theme within own areas of expertise.

Essential skills, qualifications and experience:
•       PhD or equivalent academic qualifications in a field related to global
change or agricultural development and a minimum of two years of
relevant work experience involving program management or a relevant MSc
and four years relevant work experience.
•       Excellent writing and communication skills in English; good working
knowledge of French would be an advantage.
•       Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to relate
effectively with agricultural research and development institutions at
regional and/or international levels.
•       A high level of computer competence (internet, email, spreadsheets,
word processing, presentation packages; databases an asset) is required.
•       Demonstrated ability to report research that is relevant to
development challenges and demonstrated ability to take initiative, work
independently and with attention to detail.

Terms of appointment:  Initial appointment is for three years with the
possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the
availability of funding. We offer a competitive remuneration package
paid in US dollars.
