James,
You'll be limited to the annulariid, Chondropoma dentatum (Say, 1825), a
fascinating little creature about 7 mm in length from the Florida
Keys...and even a transfer from the Keys to your home would be from one
"zoogeographic zone" (fide Henk) to another. Might have to stick with
zonitids and polygyrids......Bummer! I realize that a 7 mm annulariid just
doesn't quite have the same allure as a 40 mm Tropidophora, but...... I
was hauled into a small closet-sized room in the Miami Airport one time for
trying to "smuggle" 4 live specimens of a Chondropoma from the Cayman
Islands and I had museum permits!! It took me over an hour to be
"released" and they confiscated my entire catch (1 week worth of
collecting). I had to wait over 2 weeks to get them shipped to the museum.
Customs agents, plant inspectors, etc. provide a very valuable service,
are now well-trained, and take their jobs seriously. Hence, they lose
their senses of humor very quickly when they see a live exotic non-marine
mollusk. And it's understandable considering the damage these little
babies have caused over the years. For anyone else interested in receiving
live exotic non-marine mollusks...."Buyer Beware"! Chances are, they are
not properly permitted. ....................Kurt
