Hi Scott,
 
I've checked the plates you mentioned against the first printing of the
Compendium. The only plate that is significantly darker in this printing is
the one on page x. The other plates were dark in the earlier printings. The
cover design is new for this printing and it seems that this is the way it
was designed.
