Dick,

I remember Harry Lee discussing schistosomiasis and the mode of transmission on the list within the last year. I can't remember exactly but I think you'd have to eat snails to contract schistosomiasis.

I'm always exceedingly squeamish about any freshwater contact in developing nations anyway, unless it's far from human settlements. I understand saltwater contact may be hazardous as well near settlements. For instance, I was warned on Majuro and also Margarita Island due to the dumping of raw sewage.

Then again I was on a freshwater stream in an unpopulated area in Thailand and felt a little threatened when I came across my first wild monitor lizard. My cortisol titers were raised, I'm sure.

I'd forgotten that Tom Rice is in Thailand now. Is he associated with the Patamankanthin brothers of the Shell Museum in Phuket?

David

When you think of the long and gloomy history of man, you will find more
hideous crimes have been committed in the name of obedience than have
ever been committed in the name of rebellion. -C.P. Snow, scientist and
writer (1905-1980)
