Just about everything. If people use a lot of it, it gets into the
system, and unless it happens to degrade quickly under treatment (if
any) or environmental conditions, it will be affecting organisms.
Additional substances of major concern include antibacterial
substances and hormone-imitating or stimulating substances (or actual
hormones).

The unio listserve has just had a long discussion on the hazards of
freshwater pollution, including industrial chemicals and wastewater.
Some people have gotten serious infections or strange, serious
maladies, though it's true that a lot of projects require surveying in
places that one would normally avoid.
