...but this is less discouraging if you look at it on an annual basis,
and assume that those who have just started collecting either won't know
that's what they're doing, or haven't yet found the list:

Less than Five years - 1.7% -- 0.34%/yr
6-10 years ago - 12.2% -- 2.44%/yr
11-20 years ago - 17.4% -- 1.74%/yr
21-30 years ago - 15.7% -- 1.57%/yr
more than 30 years ago -- 53% 1.77%/yr (assuming a 30 yr span)

I registered in the 11-20 yr category because that's when we started to
keep shells we'd collected, because the National Museum had stopped
accepting them -- we started collecting in 1971, which would be in the
 >30 yr category.
