David,

I keep many things others might discard. I collect mostly fossil material
and "gem" is rarely in my vocabulary. With Recent shells, if I can
identify it, I usually keep it. If I have several reasonable specimens
from an area, then I would probably discard or not collect a borderline
specimen.
