There is a book called "Shells, Guide to the Jewels of the Sea" by Giorgio
Gabbi. It is published by Abbeville Press Publishers.  It gives pretty good
information on the animals that form shells and how shells are formed. There
are some very nice in situ photos as well.  It is not overly technical.
