At least 'mollusks' would imply the Phylum Mollusca whereas 'shell' can imply at least 2 phyla (Mollusca and Brachiopoda). Granted, brachs are a 'minority' group when compared with mollusks...but only if you're looking at contemporary, not Paleozoic, specimens.
