Hi Marlo - It looks like it could be an ommastrephid squid, but I can't tell for sure. Do you have the specimen?? The family ommastrephidae is easy to identify because it has an inverted T funnel locking apparatus on its funnel (http://www.tolweb.org/Ommastrephidae). Illex has an interesting club. The very distal-most part has a section with 8 series of suckers (see http://www.tolweb.org/Illicinae/19940). Does your club look like this?? If so, you are in the right genus.

Cheers,
Liz Shea

I believe I may have narrowed to the genus, but have insufficient experience
with squid to get to the species level. Caught in deep water off Key West.
Any suggestions?
