Dear Listers,

I am pleased to inform that Dr. Jeff Nekola, Research Associate, Biology
Division, New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, Albuquerque, New
Mexico, and Associate Professor, New Mexico Museum of Natural History and
Science, Albuquerque, New Mexico, was selected as recipient of the 2009 R.
Tucker Abbott Visiting Curatorship at The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum. The
curatorship, established originally in accordance with the wishes of the
late Dr. R. Tucker Abbott, Founding Director of the Shell Museum, is awarded
annually to enable malacologists to visit and work at the Museum for a
period of one week.

Dr. Nekola will assist the Museum in curating and expanding its holdings of
land snails, with emphasis on southern Florida representatives. Dr. Nekola
explained in his proposal: "While these taxa have certainly captured the
imagination of countless collectors over the years, southern Florida land
snail biodiversity (here defined as all points south of Tampa Bay) includes
at least 75 other species, many of which are limited within the continental
USA to the region." Dr. Nekola will also collect in southern Florida aiming
to increase the number of holdings of the Museum's land snail collection.

Dr. Nekola will visit in the Fall 2009. I will announce the period of his
visit and the date of his program at the Museum as soon as the exact dates
are set.

Best wishes,

José
