If you checked after several warm sunny days, and your friend checked
after a large rainstorm, you're probably both right.  Such habitats
are likely to be schizohaline, with the degree of variation depending
on the connectivity to the ocean, volume to surface area ratio, etc.
It's also possible that the pond has a degree of stratification, so
that the shallows may be diluted after rain while the lower part stays
salty.
