It also depends on what you are trying to do.  There are a number of
protocols developed for surveys for rare species (mainly mussels).
Just looking to see what taxa are present will be different from an
official "unless there's a rare species there we're building a
shopping mall on it" type of report, which is different from an
ecological study.
