I'm glad the response was helpful.

Aquaculture is farming just as you said, like is commonly done for certain fish, shrimp, and oysters.

Collected for the shell trade means that specimens are harvested live, cleaned, and sold for the shell.

Best wishes,

John

Subject: Re: [CONCH-L] Seashell Info Help Request

Aloha!

Holy seashells! Thank you for your responses, John! I greatly appreciate them so much!!! Thank you very much as well, Peggy!! (Please note I have a few more questions below.)

Ellen, to answer your question, I created a form of bodywork (Kapa Kai) using elements of the sea. The shells are either placed on the client’s body, or heated/cooled/or room temperature and used in various bodywork and massage techniques. (You can ‘sea’ more at www.Kapa-Kai.com if you want to swim over.)

That being said, I always look to verify how the shells came to be sold. I online search and ask the vendors I purchase them from (who said and state on their site that they are from food sources), and now am happy to find all of the shell enthusiasts and experts here to help educate as well.

My intention is to work with shells as re-purposing, such as shells from food sources, or surrendered shells from the sea. I don’t want to purchase ones that have been taken from the seas alive just to get the shell itself to sell, or are endangered.

What does ‘aquaculture’ mean? Is it like like ‘farming’ where they are produced for food (like some salmon farms)?

Also, when you say ‘collected for the shell trade’ does that mean diving and collecting them living, or found surrendered on the shore?

I’d love any advice/feedback you may have on shells that are common food sources or surrendered shells, or beaches to find surrendered shells, and places you’d recommend to purchase shells that are honest.

Again, THANK YOU so much for your time and information. It really means a lot to me!

Oceans of Blessings,

Bobbie Jo

p.s. I also research on ancient uses of seashells throughout time. If anyone has any suggested resources there as well, I’d greatly appreciate it. Thank you again!!
