The possible "double entendre" in my quesion re Cyp. color/pattern
variation, was quite unintentional!!  Sorry if it inadvertantly offended
anyone.
 
        Despite Mark's interesting anecdote, however, i do not feel the
question has been settled.  What are the theories?  Are cowries' shells
visible to predators very often?  Do the colors&patterns sometimes
factor in mating  displays?  I  am genuinely curious!!
