My four year old daughter picked out a cowrie that matches your description
exactly - and is definitely a Cypraea tigris that has been either polished or
acid dipped to remove the spotted layer and reveal a purple top. There was a
basket full of them in a gift shop in Bar Harbor, Maine last summer (and
elsewhere, too, no doubt.)
