The beach sand at Waikiki is pumped in by barges supposed to be in about 100
foot depth plus every 5 years or so. It gradually is swept out again.
During severe storms sand is also swept out to deeper water from the reef
edge (end of shallow water) to about 100 foot depth. Sand moves around
quite a bit. Whole beaches on the NW side of Oahu (with no barrier reef)
move out to sea and then back in with storms. Around Waikiki it does not
move back in to the dry beach probably due to a quite wide very shallow
water area.
