This is to let you know that on October 13th 2010
dr H.E. Coomans passed away. He was born in
Amsterdam on June 9, 1929 After his study Biology
at the University of Amsterdam he left in 1957
for Curaçao (Netherlands Antilles), where he
studied the molluscan fauna of this region at the
CARMABI institute. In 1960 he went to New York to
reorganize the molluscan collection in the
American Museum of Natural History, where he
became colleague of dr W. Emerson and W. Old. In
1965 he became head of the department of
Malacology of the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam. He
got his Ph.D. in 1974 for his research on the
life of a 19th century malacologist on the island
of St. Maarten (Van Rijgersma). He retired in
1994. After retirement he initiated and edited
the publication of many books on the Netherlands
Antilles. Letters of condolence can be send to
his eldest daughter:
