The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum, Sanibel, FL, is pleased to invite
applications for the 2000 R. T. Abbott Visiting Curatorship.

The Curatorship, established originally in accordance with the wishes of
the late Dr. R. T. Abbott, Founding Director of the Shell Museum, is
awarded annually to enable malacologists to visit the museum for a period
of one week. The R. T. Abbott Visiting Curatorship is accompanied by a
stipend of $1500. Abbott Fellows will be expected, by performing
collection-based research, to assist with the curation of portions of the
museum's collection and to provide one evening talk for the general public.
The museum collection consists of marine, freshwater, and land mollusks,
with emphasis on southern and southwest Florida and the Caribbean. A large
percentage of the records has been cataloged through a computerized
database management system. A substantial portion of the time will be
apportioned to research in the museum collection, but field work in SW
Florida can be arranged.

Interested malacologists are invited to send a copy of their curriculum
vitae together with a letter detailing their areas of expertise and
research objectives, and to provide a tentative title for their talk. Send
materials to:

Dr. José H. Leal, Director
The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum
P. O. Box 1580
Sanibel, FL 33957

Applications for the 2000 Visiting Curatorship should be sent no later than
31 January 2000. The award will be announced by 28 February 2000. Questions
about the award should be directed to Dr. Leal at:
