Having observed thousands of cowries in their natural state, I observed that
when cover with water their mantle always seemed to be covering the shell.
Once disturbed the mantle retracts quickly. When on exposed reef the mantle
was rarely if ever extended. I would guess that is might have to do with the
direct sun possibly drying out the mantle or some such things.

Any thoughts or comments?
