Dear Paul,

As Carlos said the navigators named this bird Dodo ( latin name is
Raphus cucullatus, syn. Didus ineptus).
The name Dodo mean (from portuguese "doido" or "doudo") "simpleton".

Ciao !!

Maurizio
from Italy.

        Dear Paul

I don't know who, exactly, named this bird DODO. But the description of
the dodo was first maid by navigators, mainly Dutch, who landed on Mauritius.
It is thought that the dodo became extinct between 1681 and 1693.

        Best regards,
        Carlos
