Hi Laura,
You should try to visit Dan Spelling in Novato (a few miles north
of San Francisco). Dan's a great guy and has his business in his
garage/shop. His phone number is:(415) 382-1126 Fax (415) 883-6810
His address is 1094 Calle Empinado Novato, California 94949
He has a specimen shell list about 3-4 times a year. Give him a call and
make an appointment.
As for collecting near San Francisco, go out to Highway 1, north of
San Francisco to Drake's Bay and along the coast. If you hit a ow tide it
can be interesting. South of San Francisco, also take Highway 1 and you'll
find many interesting tide pool area. Beware of the collecting laws of
live creatures. Most of the game wardens don't know a clam from a
gastropod and forget the idea of species. If you have a California Fishing
License you may take edible clams. Abalones need an extra tag (more money)
and may be taken only north of San Francisco Bay.
I hope that this helps a bit.
