Dear Michael,
Thank you so much for your kind help. Here in Humboldt Co.,
California, there are not ANY places to get references such as this and
your help is greatly appreciated. Humboldt State University has a very
small mollusk collection and their reference collection on mollusks is very
poor. They usually ask for MY help in ID'ing materials.
Conch-L has been great in filling in those blank spaces for our
collection.
Thank you again.
Dan

>"Polinices orbicularis Numland" actually should read Euspira orbicularis
>(Nomland, 1916) and was described by Jorgen O. Nomland as "Natica (Neverita)
>orbicularis" in the Bulletin of the Department of Geology, University of
>California Publications vol. 9, No. 14, pp. 199-214, pls. 9-11. The
>description is on p. 207 and the species is figured on pl. 10, figs. 4a-4b.
>The type is described as being 38 mm high, 44 mm in diameter, and the
>species is said to be "...found at numerous localities in the Jacalitos and
>Etchegoin".
>According to the monograph on Northeastern Pacific Naticidae by Louis
>Marincovich (Bull. Amer. Paleont. vol. 70, No.294, 1977, pp. 169-494, pls.
>17-42) this taxon is a junior synonym of Euspira galianoi (Dall, 1909). In
>the original description, Euspira orbicularis (Nomland, 1916) was not
>compared to Euspira galianoi (Dall, 1909); it was only compared to and
>differentiated from Neverita recluziana (Deshayes, 1839).

>Hope this info helps,
