Land and freshwater shells can often be useful for archaeologists by providing information about local environmental conditions.  Conversely, archaeological specimens from middens have been an important source of information about regional faunas before modern changes, especially faunas that are not doing well today (e.g., freshwater mussels and pleurocerid snails).
