David Kirsh mused,
> I've often wondered about some of the shells named "Common" this or that,
that I've never even found a fragment of, for instance, The Common Awning
Shell, Solemya velum. Has its population declined steeply, or is it found
much more frequently in the northern part of its range or have I completely
missed its habitat?

Both of these are possibilities, but there's another. Some common shells are
common only in muddy environments that attract few conchologists, where
shells are not cast up on beaches despite being present in large numbers.
For nuculids and nuculanids, you might try dredging Long Island Sound off
Connecticut.

Cheers,
Andy
