Also, exposed rock in the area is generally Paleozoic (though random
chunks from almost any age might be present due to glaciation). The
circular structure is an echinoderm column, as Andrew suggested.
Shawn's specimen form the beach at St. Pete could easily be from
almost anywhere due to human activity and the harbor-I've seen a
Babylonia with hermit crab in the bay. If it really is local, it
probably is worn-down fossil bone, based on the color and texture.
