Rory,

The following is from a book I edited, The Mollusks: A Guide to Their
Study, Collection, and Preservation (2006). It may help. If you get other
references, please pass them along. Text follows my signature.

Regards,
Charlie

2.6 TECHNIQUES FOR MARKING AND
TAGGING MOLLUSKS
Occasionally you will want to study the movements
of mollusks. You might want to study how
dead shells are moved by the tides. On the other
hand, you might need to study the movements of
a group of live mollusks. What follows is a list of
techniques for marking shelled mollusks. While
there are techniques for tracking mollusks without
shells (Anderson 1973, Richter 1976, Grimm 1996,
Coyer et al. 1999), further discussion of these techniques
is beyond the scope of this chapter. Coyer
et al. (1999) reviewed methods ffor tagging various
forms of marine life.

Anderson, E. 1973. A method for marking nudibranchs.
Veliger 16: 121.

Richter, K. O. 1976. A method for individually marking
slugs. Journal of Molluscan Studies 42: 146-151.

Grimm, B. 1996. A new method for individually marking
slugs (Arion lusitanicus (Mabille)) by magnetic
transponders. Journal of Molluscan Research 62:
477-482.

Coyer, J., D. Steller, and J. Witman. 1999. The Underwater
Catalog: A Guide to Methods in Underwater
Research. Shoals Marine Laboratory, Ithaca, New
York. 151 pp.
