I'd like to add a couple points.  In response to a previous post, according
to US law, copyright is automatic, no notice required.  So, unless there is
a notice saying a piece is public domain, assume it isn't.
 
It has also happened that church choirs, caught with copied music (another
very common practice) have been fined PER COPY.  carrying that precedent to
the Web could potentially see you fined $X per picture per hit on that
picture (20 people look at your page, there's another 20 copies YOU are
responsible for).
