S. gigas are vegetarians.  They feed on a wide variety of algae (marine
plants), as well as decomposing organic matter called detritus.
They select delicate, thin and filamentous algae which are easy to
digest, rather than the coarser varities (Ref: The Queen Conch by
Katherine D. Orr and Carl J. Berg, Jr.)
 
Having said that, I have known fisherman to actually hook and land
the species while bottom fishing in Key West with a dead shrimp for
bait.  It didn't happen often - but it did happen.
