Before anybody "hollers", viruses are very much on-topic on Conch-L.
Listserves are the  worst to spread a virus quickly, and all of us need to
be on our toes.
 
Personally, I no longer use a virus detection program, because they are
infamous for causing problems with other programs you are running.  In
addition, a virus program is only good on the day it is issued.  If you
don't get a daily update, then you aren't protected.
 
I have found a free way to check your computer for viruses.  I don't know
much about it yet, but trust the site where it is.  Paid for by advertisers,
you can go there and have your computer checked while you are on line -
daily, if you wish.  It will require about 30 minutes in all the first time
you go to the page, with a 56K V.90 modem.  Once it is in your temporary
Internet folder, it won't take so long.  The scan on my 2+ GB's of files
took about 4 minutes.
 
It is a good idea to think of your fellow subscribers and keep your computer
clean so you don't pass along viruses to the rest of us.
