I just don't think anyone can imagine (unless you've done it) the reaction of
children to shells!  Last Spring (March 1998 - May 1998), I (as a parent
volunteer) provided a program to our children's elementary school
Kindergarten through 5th grade - as a supplemental science program - talked a
little bit about shells, mollusks, etc. - but provided a number of shells for
the children to handle and explore.  Our school is average middle class; you
would be amazed at the number of children who have never seen, touched or
even heard of a sea shell!  We are sponsoring a collecting for the school as
a permanent exhibit and supplement for the teachers to use.  This year,
unfortunately, I did not have as much time to give due to a number of
commitments - but did provide the program in my children's class.  We made a
"Shell" book, had "centers" to rotate and as a result of my last trip to
Sanibel, I was able to give each student a specimen w/the scientific
description, etc. as a keepsake.  We included hermit crabs and backyard
"slugs" , too, to compare and prompt additional discussions.  You guys just
can't realize the need in our schools for this.  I am amazed that there is
literally nothing (at best) referenced in elementary science books about
mollusks and shells - it is completely overlooked (and to think mollusks are
2nd largest group of animals!!!).  You would also be surprised at the
reactions from "teachers" and "school administrators"..........you know - our
educators!!
Anyway, I would encourage anyone to think about how they might be able to
share their collection(s) or time for the benefit of children.  It's an
experience you won't forget!!  (I have a great collection of "shell letters"
from students to add to my shell collection now!!)
