Ph.D. fellow: Cropping Systems and Climate Change
The Faculty of Life Sciences (LIFE), Department
of Agricultural Sciences wishes to appoint a
Ph.D. fellow in the Impact and Adaptation to
Climate Change in Cropping Systems
from 1. January 2008 for a 3 year period.
Job description
With reference to the project manager, the work
of the Ph.D. fellow will consist mainly of duties
in connection with improving the basis for
evaluating climate change effects on arable
cropping systems in Northern Europe as affected
by both direct and indirect pathways and through
changes in climatic variability. Direct climate
change effects refer to CO2 and climate effects
on crop physiology, whereas indirect effects
refer to effects mediated through other effects
(e.g. nutrient supply, weeds, pest and diseases),
most of which are strongly influenced by
management. The work could include: 1) an
analysis of the effects of past inter- and
intra-annual climatic variability on crop yield
and N uptake, 2) a comparison a range of
soil-plant-atmosphere models for simulating
response to climatic variability and climate
change, 3) an experimental study of the effects
of extreme rainfall events (duration and
intensity) on crop productivity and quality
including disease processes and effects and 4)
scenario analyses with one or more models for assessing likely impacts.
The appointee should have qualifications within the following areas:
* Agronomy and crop physiology
* Plant and/or crop modelling
* Statistical analysis
Qualification requirements
In connection with the appointment to the post,
importance will be attached to the applicant
having the following professional and personal qualifications:
· An MSc degree in relation to the above
subject area from an internationally renowned university
· The candidate’s research potential and commitment.

Ph.D. programme at the Faculty of Life Sciences,
Copenhagen University, when accepted for the
post. The Ph.D. fellow will be employed at the
Faculty of Life Sciences, but the primary working
place will be the Faculty of Agricultural
Sciences in Foulum, Aarhus University.
The PhD fellow will be attached to the Research
School for Organic Agriculture and Food Systems
(SOAR). It is the aim of SOAR to strengthen and
to increase the scientific level in research of
relevance for organic agriculture. More
information is available at: <http://www.soar.dk/>www.soar.dk.
