There was only ever one edition of the Compendium. First it was published by Dutton, then by Abbott himself (as "American Malacologists") and finally by Odyssey publishing. A corrected version was often discussed but never appeared.
The Japanese version used the same pictures, but the text (including many identifications) was substantially modified and it qualifies as a separate work.

Subject: [CONCH-L] Compendium of Seashells, how different are the new editions?
Hello All.
My general reference that I use for 'popular' shells is the first edition, 1983. How much were the newer editions updated or were they just new printings? Is it worth updating?
