Dear Alan and listers,
If we are talking about any of the forms of Conus spurius and not just that Florida, I have a specimen from Honduras that measures 115.8 mm. I got it from a lobster fisherman in 1989; he caught it "crabbed" in a lobster trap, of all things. I had a second specimen in the same batch that must This specimen must have been in my collection when you inspected it. Perhaps it was in the Honduras showcase and not in its appropriate drawer and I just forgot to point it out to you.
Emilio

When I wrote 'Conus of the Southeastern United States and Caribbean,' I gave
105 mm as the maximum reported size (p. 346) based on the 6th edition of
'Registry of World Record Size Shells" by Barbier, Quiquandon and Santini
(2009) (see also p. 37). Their record was listed for C. spurius atlanticus
from Florida. If any one has information on a larger one, I could mention it
in an electronic supplement. The longest shell I encountered in my study was
97 mm, from off Egmont Key, Florida Gulf Coast, in the American Museum of
Natural History, and illustrated on Plate 97, fig. 12 .

I suspect that a review of the actual WRS data sites will show larger
than that.
