They're generally in sandy areas though I have seen a couple in turtle
grass beds (intertidal!). I suspect they eat epiphytes and detritus. Once I
found one by a short, curved trail leading to a "rock pile" (the
xenophora). This is in Florida and the Bahamas.
Once I found a string of fresh dead (stinky) xenophora while diving in sand
near a reef off West Florida after a red tide. I think they must have died
due to the red tide, whether because of toxins or lack of oxygen I don't
know.
