David,
  I have kept one land snail for 1-1/2 years and two others for 3-4 months
now.  I have used tap water (chlorinated) and well water with no noticable
effects.  The latter snails were obtained as juveniles and are growing
nicely.  the main water source for these two is chlorinated water.
