There seems to be a flood of these kinds of messages lately. I am going
to post some pointers that I suggest you store in your e-mail program
under "Conch-L".
First of all, to change any of the options on your subscription to
Conch-L your message must go a computer that recognizes the commands,
not to the e-mail section, where you receive and send messages.
Therefore all such changes must go to this address only (and not the
place where you post messages):
[log in to unmask]
You will notice that no mention of Conch-L is given. This address
communicates with a computer and recognizes and carries out certain
commands unique to the Conch-L listserve (as well as others). So that
is the number one thing you must remember. To change subscription
options, you must use this address .
A subject in your e-mail is unnecessary, since no human is sitting there
wondering what you are writing about. The body of the message must
contain a very precise instruction with no extras comments added. It
also must contain the word CONCH-L so it will recognize what group you
are referring to. Since everybody already subscribes, I won't include
that command, but here are the most commonly used other commands. Type
these phrases in the body of your e-mail - exactly at typed here - no
added comments, then click "Send":
1. unsubscribe CONCH-L
2. SIGNOFF CONCH-L
3. SET CONCH-L NOMAIL
4. SET CONCH-L MAIL
5. SET CONCH-L DIGEST
6. QUERY CONCH-L
7. INDEX CONCH-L
8. REVIEW CONCH-L
The first two are self-explanatory, you want to get off the listserve
and stop receiving e-mail, and don't ask me why there are two different
commands that work - but use either one.
No. 3 - you want to temporarily stop receiving e-mail postings while you
are away from your computer. You can go to the Conch-L home page later
to catch up on what you missed.
No. 4 - you are back at your computer and want to resume receiving
e-mails.
No. 5 - You wish to receive the digest - a once-a-day grouping of all
postings that arrive as one e-mail. Advantages - may decrease download
time. Disadvantages, you cannot save or response to an individual
message.
No. 6 - you want to know the current status of your subscription.
No. 7 - This will get you a list of the available archived emails.
No. 8 - you want a list of all subscribers to Conch-L.
The following two commands are more general, which apply to all
listserves, not particularly Conch-L.
HELP - A list of general listserve commands that computers can
recognize. You have to add to these commands the listserve you wish to
change your options for.
INFO REFCARD - A user's manual that refers to all listserves in general,
not Conch-L in particular.
I repeat these requests must go to only one address:
[log in to unmask]
When the computer receives and recognizes your request within a matter
of seconds you should receive and acknowledgment of your request, that
asks that you simply confirm the request by clicking reply and typing OK
in the body of the e-mail. Within seconds again, you will receive
confirmation that the command has been carried out. If you don't, you
didn't do it right.
