One unusual thing I used Rice’s List for was parenthesis. Each genus name was followed by the Author and date of origination. If the shell I was dealing with was listed as part of the included species and had authorship dating to prior to the erection of the genus = parenthesis. Of course this was pre-WoRMS and not completely accurate but it was better than nothing.
