Higo, Callomon, and Goto list Spondylus varius Sowerby I, 1827 as a senior synonym of S. varians Sowerby, 1847. Sherborn lists neither name.
As spondylids filter feed, the stuff growing on them may even compete for food, but it probably provides some camouflage for the clam as well as a nice substrate for the algae/sponge/etc.
Cementing mollusks might provide chamaflage.
