Might be - there are tall tales in the U.S. and whoppers here in Texas.

"Weekend of June 28th 2008
Show #1087
This week on Texas Country Reporter, Meet a car mechanic who gave his
favorite blast from the past a new future. Steve Wynne, DeLorean Motor
Company, 15023 Eddie Drive, Humble, TX 77396 MAP 281-441-2537
Pay respects to Old Rip, the state's most famous horny toad. Kelly
Armstrong, Eastland Chamber of Commerce, Eastland, TX MAP 1-877-2OLD-RIP
"

Maybe you are thinking of a more water based toad. In El Paso the
'fleshy' toads waller down in the mud as the pond
of desert starts to dry out from a monsoon rain. They come out when the
next storm hits and go through another cycle.

But old 'Rip' was a dry type of Horned Toad from the southwest. Mostly
thorn. :-)
