I would like to set out establishing a pretty specific range for Pyganodon
lacustris, a (relatively) recently re-recognized American mussel species.
I know that it is a freshwater mussel species that was proved distinct
from other similar species (Pyganodon grandis and Pyganodon cataracta)
through both morphological and allozymic evidence presented by Hoeh and
Burch in a 1989 Walkerana paper. Does anyone know if an effort has been
made to establish the specific range of the species? Many examples of "P.
cataracta" have been listed from western NY, but I have been led through
research to wonder if they might all be misidentified P. lacustris? If
anyone has done any work in this area or know of people who might be
helpful with this subject, I would love to hear from you.
-Thanks, Kevin Czaja
