I recently was given a catalog of "used books" that are currently being
sold by the firm Antiquariaat Junk. As I was looking through the catalog,
which itself is quite impressive, there were books by the likes of
the Sowerby's, Kiener, H & A Adams, Blainville, W. Wood, Chenu, da Costa,
Dautzenberg, Montfort, Ferussac and Deshayes, Born, Reeve, Swainson,
Tryon, Martini and Chemnitz, just to name a few. If one was to buy all
the books listed at the advertised cost you would lay out $1,097,003.50 US
dollars. This figure was calculated for my wife who was tired of hearing
me moan over the works included and I believe wanted to give me something
to do in another room :-)
Most of these works, there are some 300 plus volumes, are from the
personal library of Antonio Nora of Oporto, Portugal. This is quite an
impressive library and I was wondering if anyone on Conch-L can shed some
light on Mr. Nora. Who is he? Is he a malacoloist? How old? etc.
Thanks.
Charlie
