Dear Jan,
The best source on this species is probably:
Smith, B. J., 1967. Revision of the Recent species of the family Clavagellidae
(Mollusca, Bivalvia). J. Malac. Soc. Australia 3(3-4): 187-209. October 1.
The species in question is illustrated (figs. 16-17).
Smith treated your taxon as "Humphreya (Nipponoclava) gigantea Sowerby, 1888,"
which should be corrected to Humphreya (Nipponoclava) gigantea (G. B. Sowerby
III, 1888). The species appears to be limited to southern Japan. The valve
remnants are much larger than those of Penicillus Bruguière, 1789, which is
treated as a subgenus of Brechites Guettard, 1770 by Smith (1976; later on in
the same work).
My specimen of this watering pot is 150 mm. or so.
