As most of you well-informed conchlers know, orgaono-tin compounds have
for the past few decades, been widely used as an anti-fouling agent on
large ships, and have been killing and poisoning marine life in many
ports and harbours around the world. A sustained campaign by concerned
citizens, combined with the ready availability of far less toxic
alternatives, has finally led to a worldwide treaty which will ban the
application of organotin compounds by 2003, and require complete removal
or over-coating of all such poisonous anti-fouling agents by 2008. In a
world of war and ecological rape and pillage, this is a bit of welcome
news, and a signal that progress is not impossible. For more details,
