About 15 years ago, the people of Key West, FL, got upset with the
Immigration Service because they were stopping cars leaving the Keys.
 
They formed "the Conch Republic", declared "war" on the United States,
surrendered and said they wanted federal aid.
 
It was all a joke, but they made lots of money off of it, selling "Conch
Republic" t-shirts, etc.
