If your read the book "CLEAN YOUR SHELLS" you will see the use of Kitty
Litter, which is not as heavy as sand, and does a very good job.  I take
some with me when I have no way to clean my shells on trips.  If you can
keep them refrigerated that really helps.  Then put them in the litter or
put litter in the aperture.
